Rick Weaver Buick GMC Tire FAQ

Buick service technician performs a tire rotation.

A GMC truck may be known for its power, or a Buick SUV for its luxury. Much of that capability and luxury comes from an unexpected place: tires. If you’re shopping for tires nearby, the parts and service departments at Rick Weaver Buick GMC are here to help you make informed choices and to answer the frequent tire questions that arise during this process.

How Long do Tires Last?

It depends on your driving habits and the quality of your tires. Tire life averages 50,000 miles or five to six years. That means even your spare should be replaced every now and then, even if unused.

What do All of Those Letters and Numbers on My Tires Mean?

The new Buick Encore GX comes equipped with P225/55R18 tires, which translates to:

  • P: Passenger-rated tires
  • 225: Width, in millimeters, at widest point
  • 55: The tire profile or aspect ratio (percentage of height to width)
  • R: Radial tire, the most common type installed
  • 18: Wheel width in inches
  • Plus additional codes for load, speed, and driving condition ratings, depending on the brand and type chosen

Do I need special tires, or are all-season tires good enough?

For most kinds of driving, all-weather tires are fine as long as they have good tread depth. If you’re taking your GMC Sierra 1500 off-road or using your Buick Enclave to tow frequently, it’s a good idea to find something purpose-built — with tread types and rubber formulations best suited to those needs.

How Can I Take Better Care of My Tires?

It’s easier than you think. Maintain proper pressure, get your tires rotated with each oil change at your Buick dealership in Erie, get wheel alignment on schedule, and drive carefully.

Can Tires Be Fixed?

Tread damage can be fixed if it’s not too severe. If you have a small puncture, visit our GMC service center, and we’ll fix it. However, if you notice that the sidewall is cracked, damaged, or bulging, that calls for new tires instead of a repair.

Does the Brand Matter?

We suggest buying OEM-spec GM parts, including tires. So much — traction, stopping power, safety, and capability — relies on good tires that you literally can’t afford to go cheap. Ask about our GMC parts specials for a smarter way to save.
