We’d do anything for our kids, and keeping them safe while we’re driving is at or near the top of a very long list. That’s simplified by the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system that’s part of vehicles made after 2003. The experts at Rick Weaver Buick GMC are happy to show you how to use this feature to ensure your kids’ safety and your precious peace of mind.

What Is the LATCH System?

When it comes to seatbelt-secured car seats, the issue is not how safe the seats are but how well they are installed. Some estimates suggest up to three out of four car seats in American cars are not securely installed, making them much less safe in case of an accident. LATCH-compatible seats are not inherently safer than other car seats, but they are a better bet for many drivers because they’re easier to install correctly.

How Do I Use LATCH?

The LATCH system uses two anchors in your car: lower anchors, used by front- and rear-facing seats, and tether anchors behind the seat, only used by front-facing seats. Follow your car seat’s instruction manual closely, attaching hooks to the anchor points and pulling the strap tightly until the seat is secure.

If you use a front-facing seat, securely attach the tether to prevent the seat from moving too far forward in an accident. Once your seat is all strapped in, try to rock it side-to-side and front-to-back; it should move no more than an inch in all directions.
