if a child safety seat comes with LATCH you should

If a child safety seat comes with LATCH, you should understand this crucial safety system built for families that go the distance. At Rick Weaver GMC, we’ve proudly served Erie, PA, families for 35 years, helping them take charge of the road while keeping their loved ones secure on every adventure. This is what you need to know about the LATCH system.

Understanding the LATCH Safety System

The LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) transforms how hardworking families secure child safety seats in their GMC vehicles. This rugged system uses built-in vehicle anchors and corresponding car seat connectors, delivering safer installation than traditional seat belts alone.

Research shows that three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, leaving children vulnerable during family adventures. The LATCH system tackles this challenge head-on by offering standardized anchor points in certain vehicles manufactured after September 2002. These durable metal anchors, positioned between seat cushions and backrests, create rock-solid connections that prevent dangerous seat movement on the go.

Essential LATCH Installation Guidelines

Proper LATCH installation requires following proven steps for maximum family protection. First, locate the lower anchor points in your GMC vehicle, typically tucked in the seat cracks – they’re marked with symbols showing a child in a car seat. Attach the car seat’s lower anchor straps to these points, ensuring a secure fit with less than one inch of movement in any direction.

For forward-facing installations, always engage the top tether anchor alongside lower anchors. The tether attachment point will be either on the back of the vehicle seat or on top of it. This essential safety feature dramatically reduces head movement during impacts, providing enhanced protection for growing children. Remember that you should never use the tether connection alone; it should always be used in conjunction with the lower anchor attachment.

Remember that LATCH systems have weight limits – typically 65 pounds combined child and seat weight. Never use LATCH and seat belts simultaneously, as this combination compromises the tested safety performance your family depends on.
