Modern cellular data networks are getting even faster thanks to new 5G technology, making it easier to get information anywhere. While this is a benefit to most drivers, it also means that the Verizon 2G networks used by older versions of OnStar® will no longer be active. Read on to find out what that means for GM drivers, and what to do to keep access to the service.

What Vehicles Are Affected?

Any GM vehicle dating from the 2014 model year and earlier will be affected by this change, as their OnStar functionality depends on 2G networks; some early 2015 models are also affected. In addition, active GM brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac) discontinued brands like Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Saturn will experience this issue. If you’re unsure if you will be affected, you can use the OnStar website to search by your VIN.

What Can I Do?

While your car may be unable to access the OnStar network directly, you haven’t lost your access to OnStar. With the OnStar Guardian app on your phone, you can still access your OnStar services, from roadside assistance and GPS location to emergency help and crash detection.

In addition, OnStar Advisors are still only a phone call away, ready to help in any emergency. Even without the network, OnStar can still keep you safe wherever you are.
